Research Experience

Independent Research Project, 2018 - 2019
     - Augmented reality simulation toward improving therapeutic healthcare communication techniques
Faculty Advisor: Dr. Leila Barmaki
The goal of this project is to create an augmented reality experience that can be integrated with current nursing programs. Such that the students are given real-time feedback on their use of language and, specifically, therapeutic communication skills while working with simulation mannequins.

Human Computer Interaction Final Project
, 2018
     - A virtual reality intervention for the rehabilitation of stroke patients
Faculty Advisor: Dr. Leila Barmaki
We created a working VR prototype for the purpose of“gamifying” the rehabilitation process under the advisement of a Rebecca Beeby, a Neurologic Physical Therapist.

Independent Research Project
, 2017 – 2018
     - Sentiment analysis of emoji on Twitter
     - Faculty Advisor: Dr. Richard Burns
A continuation of the project started in the summer undergraduate research institute. Confirmed results of original algorithm via human data using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform. Additionally, another corpus of over 50 million tweets was collected for the purpose of comparison and verification of reproducibility.

Summer Undergraduate Research Institute, 2017
     - Sentiment analysis of emoji on Twitter
     - Faculty Mentor: Dr. Richard Burns
Created a twitter scraper to collect a corpus of text comprised of strictly English tweets. At the end of collection, the corpus contained over fifty million tweets. A dictionary based sentiment scoring algorithm was created and applied to the tweets. Another algorithm was devised to assign a sentiment score to emoji based on the average sentiment of the tweets that use the given emoji.

Cognitive Psychology Laboratory Final Project, 2017
     - Emotional implication of emoji in ambiguous text
     - Professor: Dr.Karen Mitchell
Developed a python program that would display an ambiguous piece of text which ended in an emoji and asked the participant to choose a ‘basic’ emotion that they may interpret the emoji as adding to the text. The design was later altered to inquire sentiment assignment of the emoji rather than emotion.
